AMBASSADEURS (Ambassadors)– ARISTIDE BRUANT, by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. The Ambassadeurs is the most fashionable "café-concert" (café where singers entertain the customers) on the Champs-Elysée during this period. Bruant is an author and composer, singing realist and often anarchic songs.
Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (24 November 1864 – 9 September 1901). A French painter, printmaker, draftsman, and illustrator, whose immersion in the decadent and theatrical life of fin de siècle Paris yielded an oeuvre of provocative images of modern life. Toulouse-Lautrec is known along with Cezanne, Van Gogh, and Gaugin as one of the greatest painters of the Post-Impressionist period.
